What Is Bachata?
Bachata is a partner dance and musical genre originating from the Dominican Republic.
Over time, Bachata has developed from its traditional Dominican roots into a worldwide social dance with several recognised styles and interpretations.
While different styles may use different movement vocabulary, connection, body movement and musical interpretation, they continue to share the fundamental rhythm and identity of Bachata.
Technique, musicality and styling may develop differently across communities, but connection between partners and relationship with the music remain central to the dance.
Origins of Bachata
Bachata originated in the Dominican Republic and developed alongside Dominican popular music and social culture.
Early Bachata was closely associated with everyday social dancing. The dance developed naturally around the rhythm, phrasing and character of Bachata music.
Traditional Bachata is commonly characterised by rhythmic footwork, close attention to the music and a strong relationship between the dancers and the underlying percussion.
Evolution of Bachata
As Bachata spread beyond the Dominican Republic, dancers from different countries and dance backgrounds began developing new approaches to movement, partner work and musical interpretation.
This contributed to the development of several commonly recognised Bachata styles.

Traditional / Dominican Bachata
Traditional or Dominican Bachata is closely connected to the musical origins of Bachata.
It commonly places strong emphasis on rhythm, footwork, musical interpretation, partner interaction and changes in energy.
Dancers may use syncopations, directional changes and playful footwork to respond directly to the music.
Modern Bachata
Modern Bachata developed as Bachata became increasingly popular internationally.
It generally incorporates a wider range of turn patterns and partner combinations while maintaining the fundamental Bachata rhythm.
Modern Bachata is commonly danced throughout international social dance communities and forms an important part of contemporary Bachata dancing.
Bachata Sensual
Bachata Sensual developed as dancers expanded the use of body movement, waves, isolations and closer partner connection within Bachata.
The style often places strong emphasis on interpretation of melodies, vocals and changes in the musical structure.
Good Bachata Sensual technique requires control, clear communication between partners and appropriate use of body movement.
Bachata Fusion
Bachata Fusion incorporates elements and influences from other dance styles while maintaining a recognisable Bachata foundation.
Fusion may influence styling, footwork, body movement or musical interpretation.
Whatever Bachata style is being danced, competitors should demonstrate recognisable Bachata timing, technique, connection and musicality.
Bachata Timing
Bachata is commonly danced using a four-count structure.
Three steps followed by a tap or recognised syncopation.
Different dancers and styles may begin their sequence on different beats of the musical phrase.
The important principle is that the dancer establishes and maintains a clear and recognisable Bachata timing structure.
Bachata as a Social Dance
Bachata continues to develop through social dancing.
Social dancers must constantly adapt to different partners, different music and different styles of connection.
This ability to adapt is especially important in Jack & Jill competition formats, where Leaders and Followers are randomly partnered.
BDC therefore places strong importance on Timing, Technique, Connection and Musicality when evaluating Bachata competition dancing.

The Bachata Dance Council recognises the continued evolution of Bachata while maintaining clear competition standards.
Different Bachata styles may be demonstrated in BDC recognised competitions subject to the music, division and event category rules.
Judges evaluate how successfully competitors demonstrate Bachata fundamentals, partner connection, musical interpretation and the applicable competition criteria.
